I put my image "Little Blue" up for critique on Concept Artist (.org)
And got very good feedback on it, including a read line drawing.
With the help of the critique I was able to get a much better result!

It's still up for critique, and I will add it to Concept Artist again too =^_^=

*This is my character Anyara :iconanyaraplz:, based on a photo of my cat*

Anyara means - Flawed Dark Night.
Japanese:
Anya: dark night
Ara: flaw, defect

Anyara is the main character in my story, Kingdom of Cats.
She has the ability to control and create water. She can also create wings and fly, but not at this age. Only grown ups are able to fly. They have the ability to form and remove the wings on command, as long as they have enough energy. The wings seem solid as bird wings, but are in fact made out of energy.
She can also morph in to a more human form, but even in this form she is just as capable to walk on two legs as four.
Her intelligence is also that of human.

Critiques

First of all, this is a great attempt at realism! I've done a colour-over for you to address some issues.

[link]

This isn't by far totally correct, it's just the best I could do without having the original picture :)

First of all, the colours are too contrasting and bright - not that you can't use bright colours, but the deepest shadows should be across the form, not in the fur. You need those shadows to give the form volume in the right spots! Also, those shadows should probably be a shade of blue or purple instead of grey. You can try setting a multiply layer over your picture to test out different shadow colours.

Second, the most important thing in realism is bone structure. The legs, torso and maw are slightly off of what they should be. The mouth is too poofy and round, lacking the correct indentation of a real kitten. The torso fluff is too high, it should descend gradually into the chest and appear softer around the neck. It looks almost as if when the kitten lowers its head, that it will be practically eating its own fluff. (Even though they sometimes DO eat their fluff, it's usually by choice) heh! :D
The shoulder on the left is too big - a real kitten has sloping shoulders.

Here is a good example of a kitten from that angle: [link]

Here is another good reference:
[link]

Third, the picture overall is too starkly detailed. The eye is going to see close things more sharply, and farther away they will get more blurred. The grass should have a crisp look closer but as it goes into the background it should fade. This will focus more on the kitten and make the picture look less busy.

In some places, the fur looks as if you used only the smudge tool. While the smudge tool is fine for getting the strokes in, by itself it will lack the realism of fur and look more like putty. Try painting over and "under" your smudges to make them more realistic. The clumping fur on the chest is very intuitive and a great start - though I think you could do well with bigger, smoother clumps. That's just a suggestion though, overall, the chest and cheek fur look best!

I wonder, as well, do you have the taper settings on your brush when you use your tablet? (Brushes > click 'shape dynamics' and perhaps 'smoothing';) Without this setting, great looking fur is almost impossible! I actually tried many times to do fur pictures before I found this setting and I couldn't understand how it worked!

Last but not least, the eyes! While I understand that the wide eyed look is a personal preference, the pupils seem to pop out of the eyes rather than being the black void that they are. Reflections can gloss over the pupils as if they are reflecting on the -surface- of the eye, but never should highlight around the inside of the pupil itself.

I hope all of that helped! I am not too good at critiques, but I can't resist helping out such a great picture! Even though I listed a lot of tweaks, this picture is actually getting pretty close to being wall-worthy if you keep it up! :D

PS - I am not a big fan of the stars either! :P

Hi there :3 You requested that I give this a looking over in my last journal. I've made my way around.

You said that mostly what you were uncertain about was the lighting so I'll talk about lighting some. It's a tricky business, certainly, and I'm still trying to puzzle through it, myself. Right now it appears as though you have a very subdued lighting, as though the sky is clouded over. If that's what you intended, righton. If you wanted a more bright, directional light, you'll have to think about that.

Something very important to lighting is the way you handle color. Right now the most problematic thing for me are those colors. In painting, using black as a shading tool is generally a big no-no, as it flattens out the picture and makes it unrealistic. In reality, in a photo, say, you'd never see that much flat grey in a white object such as the kitty's chest.

Now, we're not going to see a lot of photos of blue cats on DA or anywhere else, but let's see about cats and blue objects.

Firstly, the quality of the shadows are going to depend very much on the overall color of the image. A photo or a scene can have warm shadows or cool shadows depending on what kind of bounceback lighting you get, the subtle color of the lighting, and, ultimately, the tone you want for the painting.

[link] here's a stock picture. The shadows are very cool. If you do a color select on the white you'll find the shadows are a blue grey color. Most outdoor shots are going to have a somewhat blue shadow because the figure gets so much reflected light from the blue or bluegrey sky.

[link] This is a warmer photograph. The shadows are all varying shades of a grey tan color.

Neither one of these is 'wrong' but they give different visual appeal.

Now let's talk about shading the color blue. Something a lot of people going into painting don't realize is that objects change in color as they get brighter, as well as change in tone. The other thing people don't often realize is that things are usually more saturated in their shadows than they are in light.

[link] Here is a picture of a lady with blue hair. If you take the photo into PS and do a color select from dark to light you'll find that, in the shadows, the color is a blue closer to purple, but as you select closer and closer to the light it moves more toward true blue. It also moves closer to white.

Red objects generally move toward orange as well as white.

Another thing to think about is reflected light. The dark areas in the kitten's chest fur shouldn't be that dark because the white hair collecting light, even subdued light, would reflect it down into those crevices and make it lighter as well as leave behind some color.

It's a bully good start, though. The picture concept and the work thus far is lovely. I like the quality of the markings on the face and you have obviously studied the fur pattern on a cat's face, which is excellent. A lot of people forget about that and it's very important for realism. Also the fact that you made grass so many different tones. Even I fall for the pit trap of making grass too similar in shading :D

You've worked so hard on this, I think it deserves a little more tweaking. If you're sick of it, ditch it for a while and work on something else. But definitely come back later and address some of the lighting issues. Look at lots of pictures of cats, kittens, other animals, in various lighting situations to decide what you want to go for.

P.S. I think the rating system is pure bullshit but it forced me to do it. What I ultimately put down is unmeaningful.
